Shalom Shalom Hanegev! I am Ben Brent, Special Programs Chair on the Israeli Affairs GB, and one of the tasks I am honored with is keeping all the great people of this great region in the loop about Israel! So here are some stories from this week:)
Municipal Elections Are Held, Barkat Returns as Mayor of Jerusalem
In a nail-biting election, Nir Barkat was re-elected into office as the Mayor of Jerusalem. The election had a low voter turn our rate (35.9%) , which Barkat feared would play into the hands of his opponent Moshe Lion. After winning, Barkat thanked everyone for following the same vision, and same path for another five years. Congratulations Mayor Barkat!
Three out of Three Nobel Prize Winners for Chemistry Israeli, All Jewish
Arieh Warhsel, Michael Levitt, and Martin Karplus were awarded the prestigious Noble Prize recently for very impressive, yet awfully confusing to me, advances in ‘multiscale models of complex chemical systems.’ These men continued the line of Israeli/Jewish Chemistry Noble Prize winners, as out of the 23 awarded in the last decade, 11 have been Jewish and 6 have been Israeli. the very fact that 25% off the worlds chemistry leaders to win Nobel Prizes have been Israeli is fantastic. Go Israel!!
Don’t forget to play the Israel Challenge. It is always interesting to see how much you know, and how much you can learn! David Ben Gurion always said, “Do the Israel Challenge, #YOLO”
